The IXPN on Thursday on 17th May, 2012 added another feather to its cap by completion and subsequent commissioning of its Port Harcourt branch by the Director General of the National Information and Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Prof. Cleopas Angaye.

The DG in his address expressed his delight in the commissioning of the second IXPN branch whose set up was sponsored by them. He stated this as part of their efforts in enhancing internet operations in Nigeria.

He described IXPN as crucial for the development of Internet in any country. This is because their presence will reduce cost of Internet by keeping local traffic local, and more importantly, they enable additional applications, which have a considerable multiplier effect on the economy.

He further listed the goals of the Internet Exchange Point as:

  • To keep local Internet traffic local
  • To enhance and improve Internet activities
  • To reduce internet access cost both to the ISP and consumer
  • To promote local content
